The debate within eschatology often centers around a “literal” interpretation vs a “figurative” interpretation. R.C. Sproul walks us carefully through the dangers of using either approach exclusively. He also explains some of the misunderstandings surrounding the idea of “literal” interpretation. My own view is that all of Scripture is the “literal” word of God but not all of Scripture ought to be take as being scientifically literal. For example, Jesus is a figurative “door” unto salvation. Not a literal door made of wood. When Scripture says that the moon will be turned to blood, it doesn’t mean the actual celestial body in the sky will turn from stone to hemoglobins and plasma. Certain things are meant to be understood poetically, historically, and yes, figuratively.
